Certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technicians put their knowledge to work through a variety of activities, including car seat checks where parents and caregivers receive education and hands-on assistance with the proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts.

A CPS Certification Course is a required 3-4 day curriculum that includes lectures, written quizzes, hands-on skills assessments, including a checkup event. To successfully complete the training, students must:

  • Be 18 years or older to participate.
  • Attend the entire training.
  • Participate in class discussions and practice activities.
  • Pass three written quizzes with an 84% or higher.
  • Pass all four skill evaluations.

 

All materials, including the workbook are included in your registration fee. Technicians must re-certify every two years by keeping up-to-date with the latest CPS information through seminars and continuing education credits.

Please note: This class can be rigorous. Participants must be able to lift, carry and install car seats in vehicles for the entire course. For more information about becoming a nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technician, click here.

Five Seat Checks – Technicians and instructors must demonstrate technical and communicative skills of all five seats in the presence of an instructor or a technician proxy. 

  • Rear-facing only safety seat
  • Rear-facing convertible safety seat
  • Forward-facing safety seat with harness
  • Belt-positioning booster
  • Installation with LATCH
    LATCH requires a harnessed safety seat must be used following manufacturer instructions. 

Community Event and/or Education

Every certification cycle, you will have three different options to complete community education credit. 

  • Attend a 2 hour car seat checkpoint 
  • Teach at  4 hours of community education 
  • Attend a one hour minimum “community education” online class
